Review: ‘Z is for Zombie’ by Adam-Troy Castro

Adam-Troy Castro’s graphic novel Z is for Zombies, illustrated by Johnny Atomic, is a very fast, very fun read. Here’s a quick blurb about the book:

A is for Apocalypse,
B is for Buried,
C is for Cannibalistic . . .

A stunningly illustrated and hilarious A-to-Z guide that bears witness to the zombie horde as it slowly overruns us. Assemble a motley crew of any survivors you can. Barricade your doors and windows against the relentless shambling masses hungry for your flesh. Grab a hammer, chain saw, clothing iron, or whatever household weapon is at hand . . .

The war has begun!

As amusing as this book was, it got a bit depressing at times. I had some laugh out loud moments and zombie fans will enjoy the quips regarding ammo and the kind of people you’ll most likely be struggling with for survival after the zombie uprising. There was a bit of a dark aspect to the book as well, though, and the bits about hopelessness and welcoming the oblivion after your inevitable bite and impending death took away from the fun just a tad.

Overall, however, I enjoyed it quite a lot. I didn’t get to fully appreciate the art, as I read a galley and only had small images to view on my laptop so I do plan on taking a peek at the bookstore at the first opportunity.

Fave chapter title: O Is For Omigod Omigod Oh Jesus Get It Off Me Get It Off Get it… Aaaarrrrgggh

Grace me with your thoughts, my lovelies!
